DSM Expands Parsol Line With Titanium Dioxide

Parsol TX, a new microfine titanium dioxide, eliminates the compatibility issue with Parsol 1789 (Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, avobenzone) without any side effects, such as deactivation or discoloration. Parsol TX significantly contributes to in vivo SPF, offers a good transparency profile when formulated and has superior stability due to a complete surface treatment. The product offers a very high degree of formulation flexibility and is compatible with almost all cosmetic ingredients. More info: Dr. Thomas Breisach, +41 (61) 6888514; E-mail: [email protected].

Croda’s MiruStyle CP Gives Hair Curl Memory

A new curl-perfecting styling agent specially designed to put the spring factor into curls, MiruStyle CP, has been introduced by Croda Personal Care. In tests, the new styling polymer, a quaternary modified cellulose derivative, outperformed other commonly used styling ingredients in terms of curl retention, curl flexibility and frizz control. In performance evaluations (compared against Polyimide-1, Poyurethane-14 and AMP acrylates copolymer, PVP K-30, and PVP/VA copolymer), MiruStyle CP was proven to display superior curl memory benefits compared with commonly used styling agents, maintaining 84% curl memory after a series of 50 controlled extensions.

MiruStyle CP is suitable for cold mix systems without neutralization. It is water soluble and soluble in aqueous  systems up to 90% alcohol. Displaying excellent temperature and pH tolerance, and unaffected by electrolytes, MiruStyle CP also forms clear gels with most commonly used gelling agents.

UBE Develops New Fucoidan With Special Properties

Tokyo-based UBE Industries, Ltd., has developed a new process for producing Fucoidan. The product, UBE-Fucoidan, is manufactured from brown algae, Cladosiphon novae-caledoniae. To prepare UBE-Fucoidan, the algae are first treated with ethyl alcohol—most of carotenoids included in the algae are removed by this operation—then the UBE-Fucoidan is extracted from the worked algae under alkaline conditions and concentrated by ultra-filtration. These conditions keep the UBE-Fucoidan achromatic and without excess hydrolysis. It is next analyzed to each monosaccharide by adding diluted sulphuric acid and heating.

The UBE-Fucoidan has a high viscosity that is based on a higher molecular weight compared to prevailing products and a non-Newtonian fluid. Cosmetically, the product smoothes wrinkles, inhibits the oxidative degradation of collagen, hyaluronic acid and hyaluronidase, enhances skin elasticity and moisturizes. For hair care, UBE-Fucoidan provides moisture, lustre and smoothness. Dow Introduces Tergitol L Surfactants

The flexible properties of Tergitol L Series nonionic surfactants make them suitable for use in cleaning products and other applications where defoaming, wetting and emulsifying are desired. The surfactants also pass OECD 301 ready biodegradability screening tests and comply with the biodegradability criteria as defined in the Detergent Regulation (EC) No 648/2004 of the European Parliament and the Council.

According to Dow, Tergitol L Series Surfactants offer excellent solvency, low foam characteristics, and broad compatibility with formulation additives.

Tergitol L Series surfactants available in North America include four biodegradable grades: Tergitol L-61, L-62, L-64 and L-81. A fifth grade, Tergirol L-101, does not comply with the European Detergent Regulation but is an efficient foam control agent in aqueous environments. Gattefossé Expands Emulium Range for Active Textures

The natural emulsifier from Gattefossé, Emulium Kappa, is a new tool for active textures. It is based on an invention that synergizes the functional and sensory properties of three hydrophilic vegetal waxes. One of the secrets of the sensorial result of Emulium Kappa in formulations lies in its original behavior with respect to the aqueous phase. More than an emulsifier, Emulium Kappa has the capacity to restructure the aqueous phase and create the cushion of water in the formula and on the skin. A genuine active texturing agent, Emulium Kappa helps enhance the natural moisturizing effect of formulas. More info: www.gattefosse.com.
